Fishing
| Surfside and Freeport are known as one of the best places in
Texas for fishing. There are many boat ramps in the area, marinas and deep sea fishing
party boats. Inshore fishing for Flounder, Speckled Trout, Red Drum, Sand Trout and more.
With a wide range of fishing spots from the 21 miles of surf from the Jetty Park in
Surfside to the San Luis Pass Bridge. The 300-yard long Jetty at the Surfside Jetty Park
has a flat surface just right to pull a wagon with all your gear. Sam's Pier and the San
Luis Pass Fishing Pier are privately owned and lighted to keep the fishing action going
all night. There are several bays to fish. Even bank fishing from the Intercoastal Water
Ways is productive. Some popular bait are Live Shrimp, Mullet, Mud Minnows, Cut Bait,
Squid, Crab, Gold and silver spoons, artificial baits that imitate shrimp and shad.
Offshore fishing for Snapper, KingFish, Amberjack, Wahoo, Crevall Jack, Lane and more is
exciting. A Deep Sea fishing trip can be chartered, I suggest booking well in advance for
availability. |

The Crabbing Pier is located at 2210 Bluewater Highway, across the street from Stahlman

Jetty Park supplies fishing tackle as well as food and drinks. The park has a great
view of the gulf and ship channel. You may walk the jetty, toss a line from the rocks, or
just watch the large ships come and go. A playground for the kids will keep them
entertained.

Sea Center Texas
| A joint effort by Dow Chemical, the Gulf Coast Conservation
Association, and Texas Parks and Wildlife, created the Sea Center Texas. Located in nearby
Lake Jackson, the 11 million-dollar saltwater fish hatchery showcases a 22,000 square foot
hatchery building that houses redfish and speckled trout brood fish, producing over 20
million fingerlings a year. The hatchery includes "touch tanks" for children as
well as three aquariums. A 2,000 gallon tidal grass aquarium features fish found in Texas
bays, rivers, and lakes. The 5,000 gallon surf aquarium features fish caught of Texas
beaches and jetties. Finally the 52,000 gallon offshore aquarium houses fish found in the
Gulf. All aquariums represent the species as they would live in their natural habitat.
There is a 5 acre freshwater wetland site designed to help visitors understand the
importance of our vital wetlands. A nature walk around the wetlands offers the chance to
view birds and other wildlife. Sea Center Texas does guided tours of the facility but you
must call in advance to schedual. |

Bird Watching

The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail (upper coast area) includes Brazoria County.
Quintana Neo-Tropical Bird Sanctuary contains salt cedars, beach dunes, gulf frontage, and
brackish marshes. The varied habitat, plus its position on the coast, allows one to
witness migration firsthand. This progressive town set aside two overgrown salt cedar lots
as nature trails, and on certain "fallout" days every bush is full of migrants.
To top this off, a two thousand foot granite jetty with handrails, extends into the gulf
to protect the harbor entrance. Down the length of the jetty, brown pelicans, red-breasted
mergansers, shorebirds, and the occasional eared grebe can be seen. At the end of the
jetty it is easier to spot seabirds such as ganets, scoters, and an occasional masked
booby. Southern Brazoria County offers a wealth of opportunities for the birdwatching
enthusiast. It has ranked Number One in the North American Christmas Count four times in
the last twenty years. During this time, more than 326 species have been sighed.
The county sports three major National Wildlife Refuges which contain every variety of
rail including the black and yellow wood storks, dowitchers, purple gallinules, and many
other species. More than three hundred birds stay on these refuges during the winter with
an additional fifty migrant bird varieties beginning in March and ending in mid-May. If
this is your hobby, you have found the right place. Located in the Brazosport area are the
Brazoria, San Bernard and Big Boggy National Wildlife Refuges they attract many different
types of wildlife annually.
